Sep 8, 1-6:30pm: “Shenanigrins and Bridging Festival” returns to Phillips West

Artists in Storefronts partners with Bridging Minneapolis to present a very kid-friendly community arts event dedicated to our dear neighbor, Muriel Simmons.

Join us Sunday, Sept 8 from 1-5pm for an arts-inspired community festival, beginning on the Whittier side of the 24th Street pedestrian bridge in S Mpls and blossoming into an afternoon of creative fun on the Phillips West side. Immediately following the festival will be a very special performance by Blue Lady at the Open Eye Figure Theatre. What a day we have planned for you!

The third annual “Shenanigrins and Bridging Festival” will be co-hosted by Dallas Johnson (Bridging Minneapolis founder and community organizer) and Joan Vorderbruggen (community arts powerhouse of Artists and Storefronts fame and the newly-appointed director of Hennepin Theatre Trust”'s “Made Here” project). The festival will feature a guest appearance by Blue Lady, live world music by Siama Matuzungidi, Lance Pollonaise and friends, a parade, potato sack races, a limbo contest, hula hoops, Buddy Goodfellow”'s Musical Carpet Ride, a neighborhood skit in honor of dearly-departed Muriel Simmons, art-making, a disco party on the bridge, a house music dance class, face painting, Simmons family snow cones, pizza and more.

Since we live in a food desert, we”'re delighted that North Country Food Alliance will be sharing vegetables with Phillips West neighbors. Imagine how happy and proud our neighbor kids will feel when they bring real food home after a day of fun!

Join us to kick off the festival on the Whittier side of the 24th St bridge around 1pm or on the Phillips side from 2-5pm and then at 5pm, you won”'t wanna miss Blue Lady”'s Global Musical Spectacle: DANCE” at the Open Eye Figure Theatre. As Blue Lady reveals tales of how the humans lift their spirits through music and dance, this enchanting and mesmerizing extravaganza will feature musicians Sarah Burk, Scott Fultz, Benjamin Kelly, Tim O”'Keefe and Shai Hayo as well as Rebecca Abas and dancers from 4 Seasons Dance Studio.

We hope you’ll join us for our lively, joyous community event. Fun costumes are encouraged. Bring the kids and bring the kid in you.
