Phillips: THE Place for Arts

By Patrick Cabello Hansel

What neighborhood has more murals than any other in Minneapolis?  What neighborhood has a world-class puppet and mask theater?  What neighborhood has its own literary magazine?  If you guessed Phillips, you would be right.  Our community has an abundance of artists and arts, and there are so many opportunities to exercise and develop your artistic skills.

The 8th Annual Art Festival “A Taste of Phillips” will take place on October 24th, but the art presented there will last for a long time.  The “main event” will take place at St. Paul”'s Lutheran Church, at 2742 15th Ave. S., from 4-8 pm.  The church”'s galleries will feature artists from Phillips and surrounding communities, the 2015 Youth Photography Show, hands-on arts activities for children and adults, local musicians, a silent auction, open mica and delicious food.  Painters, sculptors, weavers, photographers or other artists who would like to exhibit their work should e-mail stpaulscreate@gmail.com or call 612-724-3862.

The Phoenix of Phillips is now receiving submissions for its 2nd edition, due to be published at the end of the year.  Writers of any level are welcome to submit poems, short stories or essays on the theme of “My Beautiful Community”.   Deadline for submission is November 10.  E-mail stpaulscreate@gmail.com or mail to: The Phoenix of Phillips, 2742 15th Ave. S.  Minneapolis, MN 55407.

Patrick Cabello Hansel is Co-Pastor of St. Paul”'s Lutheran Church on 15th Ave.
