Animate the neighborhoods during the COPA Art Crawl

BY JOHN AKRE

Help create a giant animated neighborhood during the Corcoran and Powderhorn Art Crawl at the Susan Hensel Gallery, 3441 Cedar Avenue. Animator John Akre will have his Sloppy Films Animation Station, a large scale portable stop motion animation studio, set up to create a community animation project on Saturday, June 16th from 10am to 4pm and Sunday, June 17th from noon to 4pm.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Akre filmed dozens of hours of video and film of community happenings in the Phillips and Powderhorn Park neighborhoods. He will be projecting some of this video while he and anybody who stops by can create stop motion animation about the evolving neighborhood. The animated video
that he will be making, “A Community Media Kit Show,” will be about how he rode his bike ride around the neighborhoods to meet his community with video, how he discovered the streets and sidewalks of the city with a small camera.

John Akre is a fiscal year 2018 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is funded, in part, by the arts and cultural heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the Legacy Amendment vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
