What does it mean to be a socially responsible bank?

By AMANDA THEISEN, Sunrise Banks

Think about the relationship you have with your bank. What do you like about how they do business? How do they show up in your community? How are they helping your family members, friends or neighbors? Does your bank share your values or care about your goals?
At Sunrise Banks, we think of ourselves as more than just a place to manage money. We strive to be a place where values and money meet. We want to be someplace where you can feel good about how your money is being put to work in your community. We strive to support those traditionally underserved or not served at all by traditional banks.

Values-based banking
At Sunrise Banks, our mission is to be a force for good through values-based banking. So, how do we do that?
First, we focus on empowering financial wellness and inclusivity. This guides our teams in how they design our products and services and who they form partnerships with. And this is where innovation and creativity can be a huge asset.
Take our Pathway2Home Mortgage program, for example. When you apply for a traditional mortgage, you must have a social security number. However, many immigrants do not have an SSN, making it more challenging to buy a home and build generational wealth. With the Sunrise Banks Pathway2Home Mortgage SM program, you can apply with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). This opens the door to homeownership for many more people, including immigrant families.
Second, we invest in communities, especially those considered low or moderate-income. In fact, 60 percent of our lending supports low or moderate income customers and communities. You may recognize some of the projects we have helped finance, such as the renovation and expansion of the Minneapolis American Indian Center, the $29 million rehabilitation of the Coliseum Building on Lake Street, or the brand new V3 Sports Center in North Minneapolis. These organizations do good by investing in people and places to improve their communities. We strive to do the same at Sunrise Banks.
Third, we support our customers with a road map to realizing their dreams. We know the path to realizing financial stability and success isn’t always easy. Sometimes, there will be detours or road bumps. Whatever your dream is – owning a home, starting or growing your family, launching a business, or supporting your neighbors – we believe everyone should have the opportunity and support to make it happen.
