About
What is the alley?
the alley is the community newspaper of the Phillips Community in Minneapolis, serving more than 20,000 residents and many businesses, agencies, schools, and visitors to Phillips.
Now in our 50th year of publication, we continue to be a forum of ideas, information, and announcements all directed at the variety of individuals and groups who are part of this neighborhood.
the alley is the only paper to concentrate exclusively on the Phillips Community. This allows us to cover in-depth the issues and stories that matter to the people who live here.
the alley is part of the non-profit organization Alley Communications, whose mission is to facilitate communication and exchange of information, opinion, culture and creativity in the Phillips community through publications, research, public forums, classes, workshops, artistic presentations, the Internet, and other means.
the alley provides a place where voices that are usually ignored in the mainstream media can be heard. We encourage community involvement in all aspects of creating the paper. We want the voices of Phillips to be heard. If you’re interested in serving on the board or Editorial Leadership Committee, please let us know! Email copydesk@alleynews.org. We’re always looking for writers, photographers and other volunteers!

Editorial Independence
The alley newspaper subscribes to standards of editorial independence adopted by the Institute for Nonprofit News:
Our organization retains full authority over editorial content to protect the best journalistic and business interests of our organization. We maintain a firewall between news coverage decisions and sources of all revenue. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of donors or their products, services or opinions.
We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals and organizations for the general support of our activities, but our news judgments are made independently and not on the basis of donor support.
Our organization may consider donations to support the coverage of particular topics but our organization maintains editorial control of the coverage. We will cede no right of review or influence of editorial content, nor of unauthorized distribution of editorial content.
Our organization will make public all donors who give a total of $5,000 or more per year. We will accept anonymous donations for general support only if it is clear that sufficient safeguards have been put into place that the expenditure of that donation is made independently by our organization and in compliance with INN’s Membership Standards.
Conflicts of Interest
A potential conflict of interest exists when an action by the board will personally, financially or politically benefit a director or a member of his or her immediate family, or a business or organization in which the director is employed or in a position to gain financial benefit.
To avoid conflict of interest, a director in the above situation must declare a conflict prior to speaking on the related issue; the director cannot initiate a motion concerning the issue; and, furthermore, the director is ineligible to vote and must declare the ineligibility at the time a decision is made on the issue.
