Pangea World Theater leads Lake Street Arts!

BY ALEJANDRA TOBAR ALATRIZ Lake Street Arts! is an interdisciplinary leadership and community development, multi-year  collaborative initiative focusing on place-making and place-keeping through the arts led by Pangea World Theater. Working with artists from East Africa, Latina/o/x and Indigenous Communities along East Lake Street, LSA! uses art as a tool to shape development plans towards a more equitable, sustainable model of growth. Through a generous grant from ArtPlace, LSA! Phase 1 runs through Spring 2016 and Phase 2 begins Summer of 2016.  Goals include a Community Organizing Artist Apprenticeship Program and a Community Based Plan to develop East Lake Street as a Cultural Corridor. Changing Climate and the Accord agreed by 195 nations in Paris is a monumental development of 2015 ready for action in 2016. Buildings between 19th and 21st Avenues on Lake Street and the Brown Institute/Community Ed Bldg. at Hiawatha and Lake will be razed for new developments.  Action is still happening to save the history of one of those structures that has been a church, a lodge hall, and a factory for Burma-Shave and its highway ad signage.
