Teams are “Planting the Seeds” to “Grow Health”

by Janice Barbee, Cultural Wellness Center Community Health Action Teams are “Planting the Seeds”' to Grow Health Residents who live in the Backyard area (East Phillips, Ventura Village, Phillips West, Midtown Phillips, Powderhorn Park, Corcoran, and Central neighborhoods) have been meeting monthly in Citizen Health Action Teams (CHATs) to develop their strategies to improve the health of residents. The Backyard Initiative was initiated by Allina Hospitals and Clinics in the fall of 2008. What was once a project led by Allina is now a community-owned project in which Allina is a major partner. CHAT: Citizen Health Action Teams mobilize to improve health

Update on the Backyard Initiative By Janice Barbee, Cultural Wellness Center Community Residents”' Strategies to Improve Health in the Backyard Residents of the Backyard have been meeting at the Cultural Wellness Center for the past six months to develop their ideas for health improvement. People with similar interests have been contributing their ideas and designing projects together that they believe will make a difference in the health of the community. So far 11 teams have formed and are now working on their projects. The CHATs are continually recruiting new members to join their teams. Are you curious what”'s happening in your “Backyard?” Backyard May Activities & Year”'s Results

Community residents learned about the results of the Backyard Initiative community health assessment in several gatherings in May. The completed report includes the findings and recommendations from 21 Listening Circles and the walk-around survey of 676 community residents, with over 1,000 residents participating. The Citizen Health Action Teams (CHATs) that are now meeting to plan actions for health improvement are making sure that their ideas address the state of health and health concerns reported by residents in this assessment.
