We Are Still Queer celebrates the queer Native community that has always been and will always be part of the thriving of Indigenous people in our lands. On view are pieces by artists Angela Teeple, Sam St. John, Jearica Fountain, Ch’ikwezens, Sami Downwind, Dusty Rose, Julian Tollefson, Sierra Ikwe Edwards, Two Spirit Corn Maiden, Leila Verley. Swedish artist Salad Hilowle creates poetic multimedia explorations of belonging, spectatorship, and the visibility of the African experience in Sweden over time. Curated by Berlin-based curator Sagal Farah, the exhibit is a collaboration between the American Swedish Institute and The Somali Museum. The program begins at East Phillips Park orchard, then moves to East Phillips Community Garden at 1:30 pm to eat lunch and look at the fruit trees there. Barebones Extravaganza Community Workshops

Our Stories and Ourselves: An LGBTQ+ Writing Workshop

History is forgotten if it is not recorded. That simple idea has always been important, but never more so than right now when there are cultural and political forces hard at work trying to erase the stories of LGBTQ+ individuals, stories of struggle and oppression but also stories of pride and perseverance. This workshop, geared towards older members of the LGBTQ+ community but open to all and to writers of all levels, will explore ways in which we can tell and preserve our stories. Participants can expect lots of time for writing, brainstorming, reflection, and questions. Through Our Eyes 2 is a new play festival and a culmination of the 2024–25 Through Our Eyes playwriting cohort at Exposed Brick Theatre. As part of the festival, two new works will debut at Phillips’ Open Eye Theatre: Burn & Dash by Sunny Thao, and Quinceñera, by Mayra Gurrola Calderon. Alternately set in the back of a van and the forest of a village, Burn & Dash depicts two girls who form a deep friendship in the shadow of bride kidnapping. In Quinceñera, a girl faces long buried secrets and uncovers a whole world while preparing for her quinceañera. Recommended for ages 14 & up.
