On The FBI Raids

by Peter Molenaar The basic facts: The FBI raided five homes and an anti-war office on September 24, 2010.  Federal grand jury subpoenas were handed to nine local activists.  The activists include eight women and one man ranging in age from 29 to 71.  Four are parents of children ranging in age from 18 months to 6 years of age.  One is a great-grandmother.  Six are members of labor unions.  All have been involved in international solidarity and peace work for many years.  They are friends and neighbors to each and every one of us. So, now they all face jail time for refusing the initial subpoena.  Conceivably, the period of incarceration might be extended “indefinitely” in the event the grand jury reconvenes with this in mind.  Representative Clark and Senator Berglin have received praise for resolving against this intrusion. Hardly a day or two passed after I had seen “The Social Network,” a flash on television announces the 26 year old Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is worth 6.9 billion.  Jesse Eisenberg plays an Oscar worthy performance as Mark Zuckerberg, the devious Harvard nerd, founder of Facebook (eclipses MySpace) burning and betraying partners along the trail to substantial wealth.  Zuckerberg and his soon-to-be ex-girlfriend Erica (Rooney Mara) are sitting across from each other, each has a beer, in a conversation clearly not on charitable terms leads to Erica breaking up with an unruffled Mark Zuckerberg muttering his own dismissive retort.  Immediately, Mark retreats back to his dorm room for a “little” revenge by posting Erica and every Harvard co-ed on the Internet as “Hot chicks.”Â  [...]

Food Obsession: ABOUT, AND NOT ABOUT, THANKSGIVING

by Jane Thomson Time to come out with recipes to use up turkey after the annual feast ”“ my suggestion is  eat it with salt, pepper and cranberry-something. I do give thanks to the Almighty pretty often.  For instance, that my daughter and 3-yr-old grandson, caught in a bus shelter on the edge of a tornado in (yes) Brooklyn, New York last month, were not blown away before the bus came.  And even every time I find my keys when I”'m in a hurry.  But before a huge meal commemorating a long ago event that is fraught with heavy questions, no, not my favorite time. So I will include a couple of recipes that could be used for that occasion, though they have nothing in particular to do with it.  The first recipe might come into play if you overdo at the Thanksgiving feast and need to diet for a few days ”“ it is a delicious dip for raw, or even cooked, vegetables.  It does call for a little red wine, but you might have a little left of that after [...]
