By HOWARD McQUITTER II oldschoolmovies.wordpress.com howardmcquitter68@gmail.com “Isle of Dogs” (2018) Animation/Adventure/Action/Comedy Fox Searchlight Pictures 5/5 stars Those who are fans of Wes Anderson and love dogs are very likely to appreciate “Isle of Dogs”. The last film Anderson did is “The Grand Budapest Hotel”(2014), and before that, as a full-featured film, “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012). A flu epidemic has broken out in make believe town Megasaki, Japan, the dogs are blamed for the scourge and exiled to Trash Island. Kobayas (Kunichi Nomura), the mayor of Megasaki, is up for reelection sending all the dogs to a landfill where food (most of it rotten and radioactive) is scarce and survival is dire. (more…)

By HOWARD McQUITTER II oldschoolmovies.wordpress.com howardmcquitter68@gmail.com “Submission” (2017) Drama Great Point Media 2.5/5 stars I never read Francine Prose”'s novel “Blue Angel” but the movie the novel is based on is unfortunately (and perhaps mercifully) prosaic, hackneyed, and squanders what could and should have a better look into # Me Too politics. Though director Richard Levine (“Every Day”) concludes his movie, “Submission” speaks for itself without rendering anymore dirty details about real or perceived sexual harassment in the workplace. By HOWARD MCQUITTER II “Hostiles” (2018) Western/Adventure/Drama/Action Entertainment Studio Motion Pictures 4/5 stars The western genre is rare nowadays, director Scott Cooper”'s (“Crazy Horse”, “ Black Mass”, Out of the Furnace”) puts more a little meat into this western/adventure story. The film is served well by the cast -- Christian Bale (Joseph J. Blocker), Wes Studi (Chief Yellow Hawk), Adam Beach Black Hawk), Rory Cochrane Metz) and Rosamund Pike (Rosalie Quaid). Set in 1892, during the presidency of Benjamin Harrison (the 23rd president of the United States), Captain J. Blocker reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief and his family back to tribal lands from Fort Berringer, an Army outpost in New Mexico, to the land in Montana.
