All wars are ugly, often scripted, and always deadly (especially for civilians and war correspondents). Marie Colvin (Rosamund Pike) is a celebrated war correspondent who went to the most dangerous places on Earth to tell the world the truth about real-life suffering in war-torn countries such as Sri Lanka, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya where the world can see rubble, dead bodies, wounded men, women and children, understaffed medical personnel. By HOWARD McQUITTER II oldschoolmovies.wordpress.com howardmcquitter68@gmail.com This year, 2018, marks the 50th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick”'s masterpiece or, one of them anyway, “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968), a treasure of science fiction/ drama although a film in this day that may not be fully understood, at least at the ending. (One can honestly say, Kubrick”'s “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” is also a Masterpiece.) Mr. Kubrick”'s “2001: A Space Odyssey” is a major example of his ambivalence about technology and its future for humanity. Kubrick (like myself) grew up during the” Cold War” when “The Cuban Missile Crisis” and threat of nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union seemed to be on the verge of breaking out. By HOWARD McQUITTER II oldschoolmovies.wordpress.com howardmcquitter68@gmail.com Burt Reynolds Feb. 11, 1936 - Sept. 6, 2018 The man with the rakish mustache, keen eyes and good looks started with acting on television such as playing in 50 episodes of “Gunsmoke” (1962-1965) and various roles in “The Twilight Zone”, “Perry Mason”, and many other shows in the 1960s. Then Reynolds got his big break on silver screen in John Boorman”'s drama-adventure- thriller “Deliverance” (1972) joining the cast with Jon Voight, Ned Beatty, Ronny Cox and Bill McKinney. Reynolds takes a role in Woody Allen”'s “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask)” (1972) . He played in “The Longest Yard”(1974) and at one time played high school college football before quitting because of an injury.
