All That’s Left of You
By OLIVER STRICHERZ This year, MSPIFF44 showed a strong initiative to represent the stories of people from all parts of the world. More than 60 countries worldwide had at least one film in the festival, mostly in languages other than English. From documentaries to samurai films, there’s an international film for everyone. The Film Society’s deep appreciation for showing international stories through film shows up in many other parts of the year as well, through other specialty festivals such as the Twin Cities Arab Film Festival, Italian Film Festival, Cine Latino, Black Europe Film Festival, and more, all in collaboration with local Twin Cities cultural centers and international voices. All That’s Left of You poignantly shows the decades-long story of a Palestinian family adjusting to and enduring the heartbreaking displacement from their homeland. Pictured are two of the presenters of the film, one of whom represents Mizna, a locally based nonprofit that, among many [...]
Large Mural Planned for Hiawatha-Lake Underpass
By CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS PUBLIC ART PROGRAM As part of the Hiawatha-Lake intersection redesign, the City of Minneapolis is working with artists Natchez Beaulieu, Daniela Bianchini, Pablo Kalaka and Greta McLain. The artists will be collaborating with the community this spring and summer to design and fabricate a 5,200-square-foot mural on the north and south walls of the underpass. The intersection and the highway underpass are being redesigned to create an area that’s safer and more comfortable for pedestrians. All four artists are Southsiders with a deep commitment to Minneapolis. They’ll combine community engagement activities, community painting techniques and community mosaic-making to create a work for this area. Their vision is a mural that will uplift the intersection at Hiawatha and Lake into a symbol of community resilience, unity and pride. To participate in this spring’s and summer’s community engagement and design activities, contact Kirstin Wiegmann at [...]
An artist’s touch is felt in all parts of her process—the work of South Junior Tobi Grumdahl Moskowitz
By OLIVER STRICHERZ As AP season at South comes to a close, countless students are living in academic fatigue. Many wonder if their efforts exist in vain after they stumble through these lofty exams, but in the case of AP Art students, this is far from the truth. This previous school week, ending on May 9, students in Cynthia Berger’s AP Art class finished submitting their portfolios, consisting of 15 works (can include completed works, progress photos, and more), meant to explore an inquiry-based sustained investigation. Since the beginning of the school year, they’ve created a body of work that will live far beyond their deadlines. The final brush strokes and kiln firings solidify their artistic efforts, an eternal snapshot of the teenage artistry of these students. This shines through deeply in the portfolio of South Junior and ceramicist, Tobi Grumdahl Moskowitz. Assorted Works - Different vessels with affixed ceramic hands created by Grumdahl Moskowitz to answer the [...]
