By Connie Norman We see Elders in the community and others with balance issues that come to Running Wolf Fitness Center. I just wanted to share some statistics with you and talk about ways to prevent these falls from happening. We want a society where older adults can live safe, healthy and independent lives. While falls are a threat to the health and independence of older adults and can significantly limit their ability to remain self-sufficient, the opportunity to reduce falls among older adults has never been better. Today, there are proven interventions that can reduce falls and help older adults live better, and longer. Each year, one in every three adults age 65 and older falls. Falls can cause moderate to severe injuries, such as hip fractures and head injuries, and can increase the risk of early death. We want to be productive and healthy and engaged with our families and communities. Each of us are different and based on the damage and partially-healed injuries we sustained in getting to our current age, we enter our elder years with a history of liabilities to address along with our current state of health and wellness. So at what point do we start becoming feeble and fearful of falling and breaking a hip which is often the beginning of the end for an elder. We often fall because we lose our balance or simply trip over something that is in our way. To begin facing this issue, I enrolled to become a trainer in A Matter of Balance.
