Honoring Veterans and enjoying Buster Keaton at premiere venue
BY SUE HUNTER WEIR The weather was a mixed bag for Memorial Day weekend. Rain””more precisely the threat of thunderstorms””meant that we had to reschedule our screening of Buster Keaton”'s silent film, The Cameraman, from May 28th until the following weekend. Earlier in the day, though, the weather cooperated and Scouts from Troop 1 helped with our annual planting. They did more than help””they did it. There are about two dozen urns that need planting and several small flowerbeds that need to be tidied up and to be filled in with some colorful spring flowers. They did a spectacular job and we celebrated with pizza. On Sunday Scouts from Troop 82 put flags on the graves of all of our Veterans and along the roadway.  The flags are a gift from American Legion Post #1, our Memorial Day partners. Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery By Sue Hunter Weir There are 139 drowning victims buried in Minneapolis Pioneers and Soldiers Cemetery. A handful of them were intentional””people who committed suicide by drowning””but the majority of the drowning deaths were accidental. Many of those victims were boys or young men. Although Minnesota prides itself on being the land of 10,000 lakes, it is the Mississippi River that holds the greatest attraction for many kids doing what kids do in the summertime: fishing, swimming, just fooling around. The headlines for stories about boys who drowned, described the boys as “venturesome” or “adventurous,” and often spoke of the river “claiming” the boys. Given the attractions and opportunities that the river held for boys, the idea that the river claimed them seems particularly fitting. Memorial Day Observance Monday, May 30, 2016, at 10 a.m. Music by the Seward Community Concert Band beginning at 9:40. Brigadier General Ret”'d Dennis Shulstad, City Councilmember, 16 years is our keynote speaker. Students from the Transition Charter School and Boy Scout Troops 82 and 1 will be participating. Everyone welcome. Hear Seward Concert Band perform at 148th Memorial Day (see pg 3). Named for Seward Neighborhood, named for Willliam Henry Seward, Lincoln”'s Sec”'y of State who bought territory now Alaska.
