Spectacular May
By Harvey Winje In the Heart of the Beast”'s MayDay Parade and Festival, hallmarks a new Spring season and the month of May which is full of other wonderful events in the neighborhoods surrounding Powderhorn Park, the destination of the Parade and the site of the Festival of Life that will draw tens of thousands of people on Sunday May 6th. The Parade and Festival - originated to help unite the neighborhoods surrounding Powderhorn Park - has now, broadened becoming a unifier of individuals, groups, and organizations city-wide, an icon of the City of Mpls. nationally, and, this year, embellished by including the local “Transition Town” movement as an “umbrella” theme that advocates for a more sustainable, oil-independent place to live in South Minneapolis and across the globe. Creating MAYDAY Welcome to April at the AVALON
On May 6th the 38th Annual MayDay Parade”'s Puppets, Bands, Floats, Stiltwalkers, & More will appear 5 Blocks north of Lake Street travel along Bloomington Avenue across Lake Street and 5 Blocks south of Lake Street turning toward and around Powderhorn Lake to the cheering admiration of thousands of people. That spectacle will be the “frosting on the cake.” The MIRACLE of MayDay in Minneapolis Right on Lake Street at 1500 East Lake Is the gathering of hundreds of people of all ages and levels of expertise during April to design and shape this remarkable Celebration of Spring and new life. In the Heart of the Beast Theatre”'s Avalon in April transforms into a giant studio where staff artists and volunteers create the MayDay Parade and Festival. April Artisans Bring MAY DAY Pageant
By Harvey Winje, In the Heart of the Beast The Annual May Day Parade and Festival is a harbinger and highlight of Spring exceeded only by the gatherings of all ages during April that produce this special pageant. You”'ve heard “April showers bring May flowers.” Well, April artisans will bring another May Day pageant. It is truly a “Miracle at The Avalon,” In the Heart of the Beast”'s Theatre at 1500 East Lake Street, where it is the first year for some people and for others, their 37th year. Folks of all ages will mold clay into shapes that layers of paper mache will change into life-like masks . It is truly a miracle of community building that uses imagination and transforms dumpster finds into magic dances of life. It is making the common things of life sacred.
