A Little Bit of Everything at Ingebretsen”'s this Holiday Season

by Carstens Smith

Book signings, food tastings, craft demonstrations, and storytelling are all part of the fall events planned at Ingebretsen”'s Scandinavian Gifts this October through December. Many of the events are free. Some are treasured traditions, such as the appearance of the SvenkarnasDag Girls Choir as St. Lucias, and other are new, such as storytelling by author Dag Rossman, who writes young readers”' books based on the Norse myths.

“We”'re presenting a sampler of what we offer at the store ”“ foods, classes, decorating ideas ”“ and we hope people in the neighborhood will come in and try a few new things,” says Julie Ingebretsen, gift store manager.  Every afternoon of October Sale Week, October 6 through 13, and all the following Saturday afternoons up to December 15 will feature a food tasting. Aebleskiver (a pastry similar to doughnut holes), bacon-themed foods, chocolate, and of course, lutefisk, are some of the foods that will be featured.

Representatives from the Oakeshott Institute will be at the store on Leif Ericksson Day, October 9. The Oakeshott Institute is one of Minneapolis”'s little-known treasures. British scholar and sword collector Ewart Oakeshott entrusted his collection to Minnesotan Christopher Poor so the collection would remain together and could be enjoyed by scholars and the public.… Read the rest “A Little Bit of Everything at Ingebretsen”'s this Holiday Season”

15th Av. St Paul”'s is 125 Years!

On October 31, 1887, six couples gathered in the home of Pr. Johan Ternstedt and his wife, to plant the seed for what became St. Paul”'s Evangelical Lutheran Church.  Pr. Ternstedt was a pastor at Augustana Lutheran downtown, but the “Mother Church” was growing so fast, and more and more Swedish families were moving into the Phillips community.  So the twelve people present at the Trenstedt”'s decided to plant a new church, named for the Apostle from Tarsus.

St. Paul”'s has been celebrating its 125th anniversary since last October, and the celebration will culminate in two special events.  On Saturday, October 27 at 6 pm, the Anniversary Banquet will be held in St. Paul”'s Fellowship Hall at 2742 15th Ave S.  The tickets are $20.00, and reservations can be made at stpaulscreate@gmail.com or 612-724-3862.

The anniversary year will end with a Festival Worship Service at St. Paul”'s on Sunday, November 4 at 3 pm.  There will be special music, and the preacher will be Bishop Ann Svennungsen of the Minneapolis Area Synod of the ELCA, the first woman to be elected bishop of a Lutheran synod in Minnesota.
