In her exhibit Uŋči Said So, Danielle SeeWalker (Húŋkpapȟa Lakȟóta, Standing Rock Sioux Nation) honors the matriarchs whose guiding presence has ensured the endurance of nations in resistance to powerful forces working to destroy the culture that defines them. SeeWalker’s paintings are a visually striking play of bold, graphic surfaces and intimate realism evoking the way that quiet, everyday interactions can be a foundational form of leadership in the community.

Help kick off American Indian Month at The Minneapolis American Indian Center’s annual Powwow and Open House. Tour the building and learn about the Minneapolis American Indian Center’s programs and history. Vendors will be selling Indigenous-made crafts and goods, and food will be available from Gatherings Cafe and local food trucks from 4 -6 pm. Powwow Grand Entry begins at 6 pm in the gym. Want to learn more about orienteering, the sport of navigating with only a map and compass? This class will provide an introduction and get you started with basic skills, including map reading and compass navigation, approaches to decision making and strategy, and information on how to find orienteering events. Memorial Day Ceremony and History Talk at Pioneers and Soldiers Memorial Cemetery

This unique annual Memorial Day program honors veterans buried in Phillips’ historic cemetery and is a spring tradition not to be missed. The ceremony begins at 10 am with the Seward Community Concert Band, Minnesota Transitions School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, American Legion Post One, and Boy Scout Troop #1. US Army veteran Carissa McCollor will be this year’s speaker. If you are able, please bring a chair.
Come back at 1 pm to learn more about this important historical landmark located in the Phillips Community that is not only on the National Register of Historic Places but is also a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom designated site.

Immigrant communities around the world have specific needs for information that are not always covered by traditional newspapers, and they have historically benefitted from news sources dedicated to their distinct experiences. Panelists James Savage (The Local Sweden), Katelyn Vue, and Andrew Hazzard (Sahan Journal) will discuss their experiences working for mission-driven newsrooms covering stories for and about immigrants in Sweden and Minnesota.
