Lake Street Council Update

Change is constant on Lake Street, and some big changes recently extended to the Lake Street Council Board of Directors. At our annual meeting we welcomed a new board president, vice president, and director at-large. Get to know them a little better here.

President: Dave Burrill, Ryan Companies
Dave is a key part in the success of the Midtown Exchange and has taken a lead role in working towards a more active and prosperous Lake Street. Dave has more than 28 years of management experience behind him, and currently serves as Director of Management at Ryan Companies.

Vice President: Candice Washington, Abbott Northwestern Hospital
With her 22 years of service at Abbott Northwestern and as a resident of Phillips, Candice”'s knowledge of and experience with Lake Street and its communities is incredibly valuable. Candice is currently Manager of Emergency Preparedness and Community Relations for Abbott Northwestern.

Director At-Large: Morgan Zehner, Zehner Consulting
Morgan brings a variety of needed skills to our board, including fundraising development, marketing research and strategy, strategic planning, and technical assistance. He founded Zehner Consulting in June of 2008 and is a is a proud resident of Powderhorn.

Annual State of the City Update given by Minneapolis City Council Vice President Robert Lilligren & Crime Update from Don Greeley.

The Phillips West Neighborhood Organization is open to all people who live, work and play in the Phillips West Community. The Phillips West Neighborhood is defined as the geographical area between 22nd Street on the North; Lake Street on the South; Chicago Avenue on the East and I-35W on the West.

This Community Meeting is an “Accessible Event” and accommodations will be made for those attending. The cost of Childcare will also be provided for those who request it. To ensure time for “Proper Accommodations” please contact Crystal Trutnau, Executive Director at the Phillips West Office (612-879-5383) at least 72 hours prior to the event.

KEEP THE DOOR OPEN

In consequence to May”'s column “Mind and Body Unite”, I did catch some flak from the comrades.  Hey, can”'t a lonely atheist do a little outreach?

Well you, Peter, by opening the door to agnosticism have, at the very least, looked upon a “slippery slope”.  Decide, please.  All right then, I shall open the door even further.

Yes, my motive here is part political inasmuch as I work with a coalition which includes ISAIAH.  ISAIAH  is itself a coalition of more than 100 Christian congregations, including from this neighborhood, and throughout Minnesota.  Their mission is pro-labor, pro-peace, and anti-racist.

In one instance I was actually the only non-Christian in a room full of  ISAIAH  folks.  Trust me, they were rational and collaborative, and in many ways strikingly normal people.

Some time later, while serving as a bus captain en route to a downtown protest rally, I noted the collared pastor among us.  A denunciation of the belief that our capitalist rulers acquired their wealth by the grace of God ensued.  “That”'s a lie” shouted the pastor while leaping to his feet.  He too was from ISAIAH.
